Student Interior Designers Often Learn About The History of Their Profession

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

In their training, student interior designers often learn about the history of their profession. This can be a really important way to give context to their subsequent careers. In this article, I will draw on my experience as an interior designer and educator to discuss the history of this exciting field.

The earliest professional interior designers were based in London – the British had become intrigued by Egyptian techniques of decorating household objects and wanted the same for themselves. London families became desperate to employ an interior designer to create magical spaces and accessorise their interiors. As interior designers came to be recognised as professionals, they increasingly found a need to draw on history to create fabulous results. This was particularly true when creating designs for historic London mansions or listed buildings – they saw historical reflections as a way of preserving the past while also looking to the future.

About Interior Design for Children

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Interior design for children is one of the most fun, delightful aspects of the business if you ask me. It is so fun because children are limitless as far as their creativity and imaginations are concerned. Whenever planning interior design for children, be sure to involve the children in the planning and-if you feel very brave, the implementation of your designs.

A good beginning point or theme for interior design for children is to start with any favorite activity or toy or even character of the child’s interest. Remember that many items of interest to children are topics that will change with time so try to take advantage of these interests and favorites with accessories and changes that will be easy to replace in the future as their interests and needs change. If a child has an interest or a particular activity that they are very enthused about and they have a special request that would make the design very special to them, go for it as Read More

The Design Institute of Australia says, “Interior designers’ plan and detail commercial and residential building interiors for effective use, with particular emphasis on space creation, space planning and factors that affect our responses to living and working environments.” This statement encapsulates the working and the effect interior designers have on society at large quite succinctly. What Do I Like About Being An Interior Designer?

Monday, August 31st, 2009

The best part of my job is the end result…seeing my client’s reactions to their home. I truly believe that our surroundings impact our lives. Our surroundings ground us. Our surroundings can make us happy. Our surroundings can give us a place to relate well with others. Some ten thousand years ago cavemen drew pictures inside their cave dwellings. Since the beginning of time, decoration of our homes has been important to people.
I hear people say, “If I could only get my house decorated the way I want, I would be so much happier, and I would feel complete.” There is a lot of truth to that statement. Coco Channel said “Our homes are reflections of our hearts.”
There is no greater satisfaction than seeing families sit down together for a meal in a dining room they previously never used or hearing that a couple now sits by the fire each night with a glass of wine discussing activities of the day, where there once was no comfortable place Read More
